What Is Camu Camu?

Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small, sour fruit native to the Amazon rainforest. Known as one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C (3-7% per 100gr), it is widely used in functional nutrition products. Beyond vitamin C, Camu Camu contains polyphenols and other naturally occurring compounds that contribute to antioxidant support.

The shrubs thrive in floodplain ecosystems, and at Amazon Andes, we honor the fruit’s heritage through sustainable wild-harvest and ethical practices that protect both the environment and local communities.

How to Use Camu Camu

Camu Camu powder is commonly consumed in small daily amounts due to its naturally high vitamin C content. Typical use ranges from ¼ to ½ teaspoon per day, or capsule formats providing 500–1,500 mg of Camu Camu powder, depending on formulation and vitamin C standardization.

Because Camu Camu has a naturally acidic and astringent taste, it is often mixed into smoothies, juices, yogurt, or sweet preparations such as desserts. It pairs especially well with citrus-based recipes, fruit blends, and lightly sweetened foods.

Camu Camu is valued as a nutritional ingredient, traditionally used in South America and now widely incorporated into functional foods and dietary supplements. Its primary interest lies in its natural vitamin C content and polyphenols, which contribute to antioxidant support.

Camu Camu gained international attention in the mid-20th century when Peruvian nutritional research documented vitamin C levels of approximately 2,000–3,000 mg per 100 g of fresh pulp, making it one of the richest known natural plant sources of vitamin C. Usage recommendations may vary depending on product format, vitamin C concentration, and local regulatory guidelines.

Origin of Camu Camu

Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) grows wild on flooded banks throughout the Amazon basin—from Peru’s Ucayali and Loreto to Colombia and Venezuela. Its greatest genetic diversity resides in the Peruvian Amazon. Fresh pulp contains 2,000–2,994 mg vitamin C per 10 g—50× more than oranges. Indigenous Shipibo-Conibo peoples call it “camo-camo” and used its red peel as a natural dye.

Traditional Use of Camu Camu

Camu Camu, known botanically as Myrciaria dubia, has a rich ethnobotanical history. Its composition includes various vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytochemicals, which contribute to its traditional applications:

  • Support for respiratory health
  • Potential benefits for cardiovascular health
  • Use in promoting emotional well-being
  • Incorporation in dietary practices during seasonal changes
  • Applications in oral care products
  • Exploration in ocular health contexts
  • Investigated for liver health applications
  • Potential use in headache management

Advanced Camu Camu Activities

Antianemic Activity

It presents important chemical compounds such as iron and ascorbic acid respectively. The antianemic activity was evaluated, these studies were carried out in children from two to six years of age. The results show that the oral administration of the combinations of these fruits does not have major significant differences in the hemoglobin indices.

Antiviral and Anti-inflammatory Activity

Camu camu improves the body’s immune defenses and helps prevent colds, flu, and viral infections. Its concentrated amounts of vitamin C help to successfully counteract the symptoms of the herpes virus, being a useful nutritional component in the treatment of viral diseases such as herpes zoster, genital herpes, as well as the Epstein-Barr virus. An antioxidant acid called gallic acid is also present in camu camu and has antiviral and antifungal properties. The consumption of camu camu can be a natural remedy for inflammation in conditions such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure. In the publication entitled “Tropical Fruit camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia) has antioxidant and phytochemical content (per COA)” it states: “Our results suggest that camu camu juice may have documented vitamin C content and phytochemical content (per COA), compared with vitamin C in tablets. These effects may be due to the existence of unknown anti-oxidant substances in addition to vitamin C or substances that modulate the kinetics of vitamin C from camu-camu.”

Healing Activity

The evaluation of the topical activity of the cream based on camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) was carried out by means of a preclinical pharmacological study in Holtzman rats in which second-degree burns were produced. The average scar reduction in the camu camu group was 69.4 ± 52.85, while in the positive control it was 69.26 ± 53.66. Microscopically, similar leukocyte infiltration was observed in the dermis and in the stratum serosum in the camu-camu, and both were less than in the control group. In the group treated with camu camu-based cream, the presence of epidermis and a greater activation of basal cells or a stoppage of oxidative processes due to the antioxidant property of this fruit can be observed.

Anti-plasmodic Activity

The antiplasmodic activity of 27 extracts corresponding to 9 plant species from the Peruvian Amazon was studied, these were evaluated on Plasmodium falciparum by the direct visual method, the strain was maintained by the continuous culture method in vitro. The IC50 of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) had a value of 3 and 6 μg/ml, respectively. By presenting camu camu activity with two types of extracts, it is more likely to present compounds with antiplasmodic activity.

Activity Against Brain Degenerative Diseases

Included in the nervous system category is the brain, which also benefits from camu camu. Not only does this fruit help improve focus and prevent “brain fog” but it can also help block the buildup of plaque in the brain that can lead to conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

Activity to Prevent Cancer

Camu camu’s rich antioxidant profile makes it a powerful defense against cancer-causing free radicals as well. Synthetic forms of the vitamins found in camu camu cannot be compared to the synergistically healing nutrients in camu camu.

Good for the Skin and Collagen Formation

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for collagen formation and plays an important role in wound healing. Collagen gives the skin its elasticity and its deterioration leads to wrinkles. Vitamin C also helps regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E, a favorable dietary ingredient for skin health. Similarly, the beta-carotene content of camu camu helps protect the skin against sun damage.

Antioxidant Activity

Five researchers in the world have reported the determination of antioxidant activity by two methods, one of titration such as PPO (inhibition of the enzyme polyphenoloxidase) and another spectrophotometric such as DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl). The cited authors agree on the potential antioxidant activity of the fruit extracts. By means of the DPPH method they report an inhibition percentage of 98.09% at a concentration of 50µg/ml, disagreeing with the reports of Allerslev, RK (2007) and Soteros, SV et al., 2009, who determined higher IC50 with 57.19 ± 5.61 μg/ml and 167.67 ± 30.0 μg/ml at concentrations of 500 μg/ml and 300 μg/ml respectively. Muñoz, A., et al., (2007) reports an antiradical power of 289.29, expressed as 1000/EC50. Klinar BS et al, 2009, meanwhile, reports inhibition percentages of 30.13 at a concentration of 100 µg/ml using the PPO method (inhibition of the enzyme polyphenoloxidase).

Side Effects and Contraindications of Camu Camu

There are no contraindications to adding Camu Camu to your diet. Excess vitamin C is not toxic but prolonged high intake can cause gastrointestinal disturbances or diarrhea. Individuals prone to kidney stones or advised to limit vitamin C should exercise caution. For most people, including Camu Camu in moderation is beneficial and safe.
